Champagne exports - a snapshot
- Champagne shipments hit a record high last year with total sales of almost €4.9 billion, a 0.3% increase on 2017.
- Volumes were down by 1.8% to 301.9 million bottles
- France and the UK account for the vast majority – 60% - of total sales, but volumes were down by 4% and value down by around 2%.
- The UK, which remains Champagne’s biggest export market by volume shipped in 26.7 million bottles last year, 3.6% less than the previous year, while value reached €406.2m, a drop of 2.2% – making it the second biggest export market by value after the US
- Exports to South Africa increased by 38.4% to top the million bottle mark for the first time
- Shipments to the US were up by 2.7% to 23.7 million bottles
- Exports to Japan were up by 5.5% to 13.6 million bottles
- China, Hong Kong and Taiwan recorded 9.1% growth
- Canada imported 2.3 million bottles, a 4.3% increase
- Mexico saw a 4.3% increase with 1.7 million bottles
- Australian imports were down by 6.5% in value and 1.8% in volume.
