Super Tuscan kicks off harvest early
The Super Tuscan producer Ornellai has said it has started harvesting its white grapes this week, in what has been an early start for many grape growers across Italy.
Picking of its its Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier grapes kicked off on Monday, with all the indications being that they were looking forward to a “great” year.
“We experienced Italy’s recent heat wave in this area too, but now conditions are cool, with optimal day night temperature differentials, and we expect and excellent harvest,” said Ornellaia’s director and winemaker Axel Heinz.
The extremely hot summer across Europe has left Italy sweltering, with winemakers in some areas having to contend with drought. In some parts of the country, including Piedmont, Sardinia and Sicily producers started picking as early as July 26th.
