Spain maintains its position as top bulk wine supplier, with sales up by 28%
Spain has seen the value of its bulk wine exports soar by 28% in the past year, to 666 million euros.
However, volumes actually dropped by 1% to below 12 million hectolitres, as the price of Spanish wine jumped by 29%, way ahead of its competitors according to figures from the Bulk Wine Club.
Despite the price increase to an average of 56 cents per litre, Spanish wine is still priced lower than other key producing nations.
Australia also saw its bulk exports increase by 11% in volume terms, pushing it past Italy into second place with 474 litres shipped, compared to 469 in 2017.
At the same time Italy saw its bulk wine shipments drop by 16% last year to 474 million litres, largely due to the short harvest across much of Europe.
However, the value of Italy’s bulk shipments was higher than Australia’s at 404 million euros, a 2.9% increase on the previous year, compared to 360 million euros, a hefty 18.5% uplift. This is explained by the average price of Italy’s bulk wine which is is 85 cents per litre compared to Austalia’s 76 cents per litre.
Chile is the world’s fourth largest bulk wine supplier, but it saw its volumes decline last year, down by 6% in volume, though inching up by 3% in value.
