Champagne producers stockpiling extra bottles in UK in case of no-deal Brexit
Champagne producers claim they have been stockpiling large quantities of bottles in the UK to avoid any disruption to supplies should the UK crash out of the EU without a deal next month.
The UK is Champagne’s largest export market, shipping 26.8 million bottles last year accounting for 17% of sales.
The CIVC the trade body for Champagne has not divulged how many additional bottles have been exported to the UK, but spokesman Tibaut Le Mailloux told Sky News: “Growers and houses have overstocked in Great Britain to fill a possible border closure if it were to occur.”
The president of Champagne producer Taittinger said "the English have loved champagne for 300 years and, Brexit or no Brexit, they will continue to like it".
