Bordeaux in numbers
Bordeaux sold 4.84m hectolitres of wine in 2017, a 2% increase on 2016, and the equivalent of 645 million bottles, with a value of 3.93bn euros.
20 bottles are sold around the world every second.
France comprises 56% of the total market in volume terms, while the export market accounts for the remaining 44%.
In Bordeaux, red wine accounts for 85% of total production, with white comprising 8% and rose 7%.
In 2017 Bordeaux exported 290 million bottles of wine, a 7% increase on the previous year.
The value of those exports was worth 2.02bn euros, a 14% increase
Of those exports, other EU countries account for 33% of shipments, with the rest of the world taking 67%
Excluding France, China is the largest market for Bordeaux wines, with a value of 397m euros up by 23% year on year, while volumes jumped by 14% to 632,000 hectolitres.
Belgium is the second largest overseas market, importing, 27m bottles from Bordeaux in 2017, at a value of 113m euros, a 13% increase on 2016.
The US is the third largest market for Bordeaux, with 27 million bottles shipped there last year, a 6% increase on 2016, and with a value of 231m euros, an 18% increase.
The UK is the fourth largest market for Bordeaux wine by volume and value, with shipments increasing by 8% to 24 million bottles last year.
The value of exports to the UK also jumped, up by 29% to 195m euros.
Exports to Germany, Bordeaux’s fifth biggest market saw their value increase by 12% last year to 104m euros, while volumes of 22 million bottles remained the same as the previous year.
Of red wines, Merlot accounts for the lion’s share of varietals from Bordeaux, at 66%, while Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 22%, Cabernet Franc 9% and other varietals 3%.
Of white wines, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc both account for 46% each, while Muscadelle comprises 5% and other white varietals 3%.
In the French domestic market, more than 138 million bottles of Bordeaux red wine were sold in 2017, a 2% drop on the previous year, though value inched up by 1% to 789m euros.
11 million bottles of white wine were sold in France last year, a 4% drop on 2016, though value was up by 6% to 42 millilion euros.
And rose accounted for 12 million bottles of wine in 2017 in France, a 3% drop on 2016, and value also dipped by 2% to 422m euros.
The average price of a bottle of Bordeaux in France is 5.7 euros TTC per 75cl.
