Spain's Marques de Caceres opens first winery in Ribera Del Duero

Spain’s Marques de Caceres has opened its first winery in Ribera Del Duero, as part of a strategy to boost its production and global distribution.
The vineyard, Bodegas Finca La Capilla, is situated between la Horra, Anguix and Roa and is planted with the Tinta del País variety. Described as “extreme” by Marques de Caceres, the vineyard sits at an altitude of 800m, with “severely harsh and cold winters and very hot and dry summers”.
“The parcels of vines slowly mature to perfection with contrasting temperatures that can vary more than 20°C between day and night,” said the company. “These conditions provide grapes with powerful tannins, richness in colour and an excellent polyphenolic structure.”
To offset the bitter cold, the vineyard will be kitted out with anti-freeze windmills to protect against frost. Marques de Caceres added that the loamy sandy soil of the region is well suited to airing and drainage, while the sandy clay retains nutrients to produce balanced aromatic wines that age well.
Bodegas Finca La Capilla will have its very own brand and dedicated team of viticultural professionals, who will operate independently based on wines of limited production aimed at specialised and selective distribution routes.
The company first moved into the Rueda DO five years ago when it bought 125 ha of vineyards, and created a new bodega producing wines from the Verdejo and Sauvingon Blanc grape varieties.
Christine Forner, president of Marques de Caceres said the new winery would enable the company to produce branded wine from one of Spain’s “benchmark DO’s”. “This new aspiration confirms our group’s strategy to become one of the top references of Spain’s best Denominations of Origin,” she said.
