Brazil - an overview of the market
- A recession in 2015 and 2016 saw Brazil's economy contract by 7%
- While the economy is starting to show modest recovery from a decade of underperformance, wine sales continue to struggle as the economic situation drove many consumers to switch to cheaper products
- Total wine volume sales in 2017 fell to their lowest level since 2004
- By 2018, total volume sales were 37.254 million litres, with modest 9% growth forecast (IWSR) to 2023
- According to Wine Intelligence, the regular wine drinking population in Brazil now comprises 32 million adults who drink wine once a month, with 70% of this group drinking wine at least once each week
- Per capita consumption of grape wine stands at 2.2 litres (85.5% consumed off-premise) with wine representing 2.4% ‘share of throat’
- Most of the wine imported by Brazil comes from neighbouring South American producers in Chile and Argentina
