Italian 2020 vintage larger than predicted
Italy’s 2020 harvest is larger than earlier estimates, weighing in at 2.4m hectolitres, higher than the most recent predictions made by Assoenologi and the producers’ association UIV, and also 3% greater than the previous year.
The vintage produced over 49,000 hectolitres, instead of the estimated 46.6m hectolitres, according to AGEA with the difference arising largely because of the fact that producers made less use of the aid programme for a voluntary yield reduction than had been originally assumed.
White wines accounted for over half of the total, with over 26.6m hectolitres, while red wines accounted for 20.4m. Veneto remains the region producing the highest volume of wine with 11.7 hectolitres, followed by Puglia (9m hl) and Emilia-Romagna (7.9m hl). Sicily is in 4th place (3.66m hl) with Abruzzo in 5th position with 3.49m . hectolitres. Over 21.2m hectolitres are DOC quality, of which 13.1m are white and 8.1m red wines. Meanwhile, 12.8m hectolitres were certified as IGT (6.7mred/6.1m white).
