Provence rosé see UK sales jump by over half last yeast
The UK trend towards rosé wine shows little sign of abating, with sales from Provence rocketing by over half last year.
According to the industry body Vins de Provence (CIVP), the volume and value of sales both jumped by 51% last year, with a total of 11.56m bottles shipped to the UK, compared to 7.67m in 2019. This makes the UK the second largest export market for rosé from Provence in volume terms, according to the latest figures from French customers.
However, the CIVP's president, Jean-Jacques Bréban said that despite the success to date, this was no time to be resting on their laurels. “We must continue to assert ourselves. In 2020, we were able to show resilience and our results were less negative than expected but 2021 will still not be easy,” he said. “We remain ambitious and optimistic about the development potential of our wines in the coming years. It is our know-how and commitment to quality that ensure the success of our wines. This is an important criterion today but it will be even more so tomorrow.”
*Provence has three appellations – Côtes de Provence, Coteaux d’Aix-en-Provence and Coteaux Varois en Provence. The region is France’s oldest and spans an area from the Mediterranean to the Alps, nearly 2000km. It has 494 estates, 63 cooperative wineries and 90 local trading firms. Rose accounts for 90% of total production in the region, and 38% of French AOC rose wines and 4.2% of the world’s rosés are produced in Provence.
