Ukrainian winery Château Kurin destroyed by Russian missiles launches recovery appeal
Denys Khalupenko of Ukrainian producer Château Kurin has contacted VINEX with the sad news the winery has been destroyed by Russian missiles and it is now looking to raise money to help rebuild the business from scratch.
The winery was hit and destroyed on March 16 as part of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the continued war in the country.
Château Kurin has been making wine in the region since 1992 and is situated on the main road between Kyiv and Crimea.
VINEX interviewed Denys Khalupenko earlier this year to talk about the winery and how it has grown over the last three decades in order to feature Château Kurin in our Region in Focus section.
He was able to share its history and how it switched from producing grapes for others to start building its own brands wines after the financial crash in 2009. It had gone from a small production of 2,000 litres a year to over 10,000 litres in 2021.
Its main production had been a range of wines including a dry Riesling, a Cabernet and Merlot rosé, an orange wine from Rkatsiteli grapes and a dessert-aged Muscat sweet white wine. It had planned to expand further in 2022 with a range of rosé, and invest in producing red and white sparkling wines.
Khalupenko said it was now in the process of trying to recover from the attack and destruction of the winery and is calling on anyone in the trade who might be able to help with its “Revival of the Winery Kurin” appeal.
He is also hopeful wineries and producers might be able to donate any winery eqiupment to help them recover.
He told VINEX: "Wine is the most civilised thing in the world."
