Evolution. Innovation. Investment. Growth.
Structural changes in the market
The trade of wine in various forms has grown rapidly over the last 15 years, particularly in export markets for Eastern European and the New-World wine-producing countries. This growth is partly due to the improvements in available food-grade freight equipment and handling, conference shipping, investment in in-market bottling facilities but can mostly be attributed to retail market competitive pressure, growth in buyers’ own brand and private labels.
These structural changes, coupled with growing consumer demand have contributed to the globalisation of wine. Commercial quality wines have evolved into a more universal style allowing supply throughout competing countries with ease. The increase of FTA’s has provided the opportunity for several large wine-producing countries to be more competitive in export markets and they report strong growth to date.
A large and growing market
The International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) reports that more than 27 billion litres of wine is produced annually – the equivalent of 3 billion cases (9L) of wine. Consumption is growing fastest in the United States of America and the emerging markets throughout Asia. This volume does not include the trading of other grape-derived products, including juice concentrate, spirit, and brandy.
